I want to be a fireman. No, I want to be a policeman. No, I want to be a professional baseball player. No, I want to be a photographer?
I really didn’t think that when I was a kid that I would love to look through a camera’s viewfinder. In fact, my love for photography came just after I finished college with a degree in Sport Management. At that time I didn’t know I would rather spend my Saturdays documenting a wedding than sitting on the couch watching sports.
My first real camera wasn’t even mine. I bought it for my wife. I bought it for her thinking she would be able to take more pictures of things we were doing, places we went and all our friends. The only problem with that was, I never let her use it. It was always in my grip.
I started reading about photography. I spent countless hours online reading, browsing and searching. I even bought books (if you know me, you know that means a lot). I wanted to know all there was to know about how to make a good photograph; what made the difference in a snapshot and a real photograph.
I found myself wanting more and quickly outgrew my (my wife Kate’s) first camera.
Several cameras have come and gone since then. I even made a switch from Nikon to Canon. But one thing is for sure. I’ve found what I want to be.
A photographer.
